Writing
Copy for Your Site
You don't have to be a professional copy writer to write good copy
for your web pages, but you do have to use good grammar and spelling
skills if you want to project a professional image. You also need
to be aware of the keyword density you place in your copy. Spiders
and robots will look for them and their overall placement.
The best practice is to use the keyword on an average of about three
per hundred words of text and to space them out over the entire
body of your copy, giving the page a 'keyword density' of 3%.
This is harder than it sounds when you're trying to write good copy
that gets your message across in an easy to understand manner, and
copy writing for the web is not the same as copy writing for print
media. If you use a keyword density greater than an individual search
engine allows, you could be penalized.
Some search engines also look at keywords in your headings, links
and alt text tags on your images, so don't overlook those areas
of your page. Ideally, every image on your site should have an 'alt
text' tag on it that includes at least one keyword if possible.
Say it simply.
Your copy on the internet must get to the point in a relatively
short span of time. You only have a few seconds to capture someone's
attention and sell your idea. Most people scan a page. They don't
read large blocks of text, but they do read headings and highlighted
areas quickly. To write good copy you must present an easy to understand
idea, solve a problem and offer a solution in just few seconds.
Your visitor must also be able to easily navigate your site while
looking for more specific information. Consistency in copy writing
can help your visitors easily organize their thoughts while they
browse. If they instinctively know where to click to get what they
want, all the better.
It seems like a lot to pull together for just one person and it
is. Just sitting down and pounding it out until it makes sense works
for a lot of people but knowing when to hire a professional web
copy writer can do wonders for your site, not to mention freeing
up a lot of your time. |
